Trojan Introduces Cheap Ultraviolet Water Purifiers
Competition in the region’s multi-million bottled water industry has intensified with the entrance of Trojan Technologies, which uses portable ultraviolet technology to purify water.
The UV technology drastically reduces the cost of providing safe clean water in homes and industries.
According to TrojanUV East Africa managing director David Maina, all that one requires is to connect a UV dispenser (domestic or commercial) to a tap or any other source and the water flowing out will be instantly purified.
TrojanUV East Africa provides a wide range of ultra violet (UV) light disinfection equipment as well as pre-UV and filtration systems. Domestic purifiers will sell for Ksh6,000–Ksh36,000 ($90-$545) while commercial direct dispensers are retailing for Ksh27,000–Ksh55,000 ($409-$833) with treatment systems going for Ksh9,000–Ksh38,000 ($136-$575). The treatment system can be rented for Ksh6,000 ($90) per month.
UV is increasingly becoming the technology of choice for treating pathogens in water as the ultraviolet rays kill all bacteria and micro-organisms. TrojanUV’s ultraviolet purification system uses a UV light source enclosed in a protective transparent sleeve.
The lamp is mounted in such a way that water passing through a flow chamber is exposed to the UV light rays. When harmful microbes are exposed to the UV rays, their nucleic acid absorbs the UV energy, which then scrambles the DNA structure of the organism. The cell is rendered sterile and can no longer reproduce. The cell is now considered dead and is no longer a threat.
Bacteria breed in water storage tanks, while old and dirty pipes introduce sediment, rust and aluminum. Breakages in pipes introduce bacteria, soil, sewer and other undesirable elements into the water. TrojanUV program will now enable families and especially those with children - who are susceptible to water pathogens - access clean, safe drinking water all times by providing them with quality water in their homes.
“Our products are among of the few affordable technologies for the home and industry. The system effectively kills the majority of bacteria, viruses, and other harmful microorganisms using energy efficient dispensers that only require about the same amount of energy as a 60 watt light bulb,” said Mr Maina.
“UV treatment is an excellent choice to eliminate biological contamination from most home drinking water, whether your home is on a municipal water system or untreated private system from a well or lake.
Its sole purpose is to kill harmful biological contaminants, and is therefore always combined with other forms of filtration - carbon block or reverse osmosis for reduction of heavy metals, chlorine, and other chemical contaminants.”
There has been a growing demand for water filters in Kenya as prices of bottled mineral water went through the roof following the introduction of a Ksh6 a litre excise duty on the commodity last June.
Currently, a litre of bottled water sells for Ksh65 ($1) in major supermarkets, which is equivalent to the price of a litre of diesel. The retail price of a 20-litre bottle has gone up from Ksh280-Ksh300 ($6-$6.5) to Ksh430 ($6.5) in supermarkets as manufacturers pass on the excise duty to consumers.
TrojanUV, the world’s leading manufacturer of drinking water and wastewater ultraviolet disinfection technology, will be the sole regional distributor of affordable water treatment solutions and point-of-use water purifiers. Nairobi will be the regional headquarters of the company which controls 77 per cent of the global wastewater UV disinfection market. Its operations will cover Kenya, Uganda, Tanzania, Rwanda, Burundi, Sudan and Ethiopia, whose combined population is estimated at 237 million.
